Innovative Sterile Grainspawn Grow Kits
This Grow Kit introduces a groundbreaking approach to home cultivation, using sterile grainspawn as the foundation for successful mushroom propagation. By utilizing aseptic techniques, users will inoculate the grainspawn with a 10mL syringe of liquid culture mycelium. Each grainspawn bag is designed with a self-healing injection port, allowing for a seamless, contamination-resistant inoculation process.
Before You Begin: Essential Tools & Setup
To ensure success, have the following items ready:
- Nitrile gloves (for sterile handling)
- Dust mask or equivalent (to minimize airborne contaminants)
- 70% Isopropyl alcohol or disinfectant spray (for sterilization)
- Paper towels (for surface cleaning)
Step 1: Preparing Your Lab Space
Selecting a Clean Work Area:
- Choose a draft-free room, such as a bedroom or kitchen.
- Shut off fans, HVAC systems, and any other sources of airflow.
- Keep all doors closed to reduce the risk of airborne contaminants.
Step 2: Preparing & Inoculating the Grainspawn Bag
- Sanitize Your Workspace:
- Wipe down your work surface, the outside of the grainspawn bag, and the injection port with 70% isopropyl alcohol.
- Let all surfaces dry completely before proceeding.
- Attach the Needle to Your Syringe:
- Ensure a secure connection before removing the syringe cap.
- Sterilize the Needle:
- Use a lighter to heat the metal syringe tip until it glows red-hot.
- Allow the needle to cool for 3-5 seconds.
- DO NOT WIPE OR TOUCH THE NEEDLE AFTER FLAME STERILIZATION.
- Inject the Liquid Culture:
- Insert the cooled syringe needle into the self-healing injection port.
- Inject 5-10cc of liquid culture into the grainspawn bag.
- If using only one bag, up to 10cc may be injected, but this is not strictly necessary.
- Seal & Store the Syringe:
- If reusing, recap the needle and store it properly.
- If not reusing, dispose of the needle safely and place the syringe in a recycling container.
Step 3: Incubation & Colonization
- Days 1-7: Mycelium should begin colonization.
- Days 7-10: Shake the bag gently to distribute growth evenly.
- Days 21+: If fully colonized, proceed to the next stage.
- Maintain an incubation temperature of 21-24°C (70-76°F) for optimal results.
- Avoid handling the filter patch to prevent contamination.
- If colonization takes longer than expected, be patient—growth rates vary.
Step 4: Preparing the Grow Kit for Fruiting
- Sanitize the Microppose Monotub Grow Kit thoroughly.
- Place the liner evenly inside the tub.
- Install the 2” Microppose PLUGS over the side and end ventilation holes.
- Break up the colonized grainspawn inside the bag and cut open the top.
- Pour the grainspawn into the tub and mix it with the substrate using sanitized, gloved hands or sterile utensils.
- Smooth down the surface to create an even layer, similar to spreading cake batter.
- Secure the lid and place the kit in an undisturbed environment, away from direct sunlight.
Step 5: Mycelium Run & Fruiting
- 48 Hours Post-Setup: Mycelium should start colonizing the substrate.
- Days 10-12: Remove the Microppose PLUGS and replace them with Microppose Air Exchange Filters to initiate pinning.
- Maintain High Humidity (~90%) inside the tub.
- Evaporation is key for triggering mushroom pinning—mist lightly as needed.
Daily Monitoring:
- Check for moisture levels and adjust misting accordingly.
- Avoid excessive misting if condensation and moisture beads are already present.
Step 6: Harvesting & Rehydration
Harvesting Your Mushrooms:
- Harvest mushrooms before caps fully open to prevent spores from dropping.
- Use alcohol-sanitized scissors or a scalpel to cut mushrooms at the base.
- Inspect the tub for contamination before opening it.
Rehydration Process:
- After harvesting, replenish moisture by pouring 2 cups of cold water onto the substrate or heavily misting the surface.
- Let it sit for 4-6 hours, then drain any excess water.
Your Microppose Monotub Grow Kit is reusable, allowing for multiple cultivation cycles with any mushroom variety of your choice.
