These Grow Kits now feature a groundbreaking process that involves starting with sterile grainspawn. In this method, customers will utilize aseptic practices found within home mycology to inoculate the grainspawn using a 10mL syringe of liquid culture mycelium. Each grainspawn bag comes equipped with a self-healing injection port, ensuring a seamless and contamination-resistant process. Please follow the instructions below for a successful cultivation journey.
Before you begin, ensure you have the following items ready:
-Pair of Nitrile gloves
-Dust mask or equivalent
-70% Isopropyl alcohol or disinfectant spray
-Papertowel
Setting Up Your Lab Space
Select a draft-free room, such as a bedroom or kitchen, to serve as your cultivation space. Minimize air currents by shutting off fans and heating. Keep doors closed to lower the risk of contaminants entering the Microppose Monotub Grow Kit during exposure to open air environments.
Preparing Your Syringe
Clean the surface you're working on, including the outside of the grainspawn bag and the self-healing injection port. Once the disinfectant has dried, attach the needle to your syringe, ensuring a complete attachment before removing the syringe cap. Remove the syringe cap and use a lighter to heat the metal syringe tip to red hot. Stop heating once red, avoiding overheating to prevent damage to the plastic portion of the syringe.
Allow the syringe tip to cool from red hot. DO NOT WIPE OR TOUCH THE NEEDLE WITH ANYTHING. After cooling, wait about 3 seconds, then insert it into the rubber injection port.
Once inside the port, inject 5104cc of genetic material into the bag, moving the needle around as you inject. If using only 1 bag for your syringe, you can inject up to 10cc, though this is not totally necessary.
Withdraw your syringe, recap the needle, and if reusing your genetic material syringe, replace the syringe cap. If not reusing, dispose of your needle appropriately, and place the syringe into recycling.
Incubation and Colonization
Allow the grainspawn to initially incubate for approximately 4-7 days. Mycelium should become visible within this period. Allow an additional 10 days for further growth before shaking the bag to homogenize and improve mycelium contact points. Be mindful not to handle the filter patch, this can be a problem area for infection. After 21 days, shake again and let it finish growing in an incubation temperature range of 21-24°C. If the timelines are longer, be patience, there are many
factors that play into the development and consolidation of the spawn.
Congratulations on reaching the incubation and colonization stage! Now, let's move on to the exciting process of setting up your Bagtek Grow Kit.
Planting & Substrate Colonization
Cleanliness First: Put on your gloves and use alcohol wipes to clean the spawn container and your gloves thoroughly. Locate the containers marked SPAWN and SUBSTRATE. Open both, pouring their contents into the designated fruiting bag.
Homogenize the Mix: Fold the bag's top twice (carefully not to allow it to spill while shaking) then thoroughly mix the spawn and substrate inside. Break down any mycelium clumps for even dispersion. Set the substrate by tamping it on a table or flat surface. This will also help remove most of the substrate that is sticking to the inside of the bag. To keep the bag closed, fold the opening twice, using the gusseted edges. Secure it with paperclips to prevent accidental openings or unwanted moisture loss.
*OPTIONAL: Using the provided elastic band, stretch it around the Bagtek Grow Kit, and snug it evenly around the bag approximatey 1/2" below the surface of the substrate. This can inprove yeild concentration, as well as simplifies the harvest process.
NICE JOB! You've completed the initial setup, and it's only going to get better from here. Clean your workspace and place the Bagtek Grow Kit in a safe, minimal airflow environment, away from direct sunlight
Mycelium Run and Fruiting
Mycelium growth and colonization typically start within 48 hours. If not, be patient as growth may be under the surface or conditions may not be ideal. Consider your temperature range at this point to ensure 70-76F is being met. Consolidation of the substrate nutrients takes around 10-12 days on average.
Once your substrate is fully consolidated with a completely white surface, allow your Bagtek Grow Kit to breathe. Briefly open the lid or bag for fresh air exchange. If the kit appears dry, lightly mist the inside of the bag, to replace lost humidity and continue promoting the evaporation necessary for pinning mushroom formation.
At this point, Inspect your Grow Kit daily. Look for tiny water beads along the surface and ensure its not drying out too much as this can hinder the performance. After 3-7 days, You may begin to see small knotting of the mycelium along the surface. These hyphal knots will develop into primordial mycelium, eventually forming 'pins' or the beginning stage of your mushrooms.
Harvesting & Flushing
When mushrooms reach maturity, harvest them before the caps fully open. Check for contamination on the substrate surface before fully opening the Bagtek Grow Kit. You can pull or fold the bag down, otherwise cut the bag open enough that you can freely harvest your mushrooms. Use alcohol-sanitized scissors or a scalpel to cut mushrooms close to the base. Alternatively, carefully twist and pull them off the substrate, though this may pull some substrate off with the mushroom.
After harvesting, rehydrate the Grow Kit by pouring 1/2 cup of COLD WATER into the substrate or misting heavily. Allow 4-6 hours of resting before draining off excess water or misting again. This should be enough to flush a second time, as long as your cake isn’t contaminated with molds or bacterium.
