Introducing the Sterile Grainspawn Grow Kits
This Grow Kit utilizes a groundbreaking process by starting with sterile grainspawn. This method allows cultivators to apply aseptic techniques when inoculating the grainspawn using a 10mL syringe of liquid culture mycelium. Each grainspawn bag features a self-healing injection port, ensuring a seamless and contamination-resistant process.
Before You Begin: Essential Tools & Setup
Prepare the following items before starting your grow kit:
✔ Nitrile gloves (for sterile handling)
✔ Dust mask or equivalent (to reduce airborne contaminants)
✔ 70% Isopropyl alcohol or disinfectant spray (for sterilization)
✔ Paper towels (for surface cleaning)
Step 1: Preparing Your Lab Space
- Choose a draft-free room (e.g., bedroom or kitchen).
- Turn off fans, HVAC systems, and any other sources of airflow.
- Keep all doors closed to minimize airborne contaminants.
Step 2: Inoculating the Grainspawn Bag
- Sanitize Your Workspace:
- Wipe down your work surface, the outside of the grainspawn bag, and the injection port with 70% isopropyl alcohol.
- Allow all surfaces to dry completely before proceeding.
- Attach the Needle to Your Syringe:
- Ensure a secure connection before removing the syringe cap.
- Sterilize the Needle:
- Use a lighter to heat the metal syringe tip until it glows red-hot.
- Allow the needle to cool for 3-5 seconds.
- DO NOT WIPE OR TOUCH THE NEEDLE AFTER FLAME STERILIZATION.
- Inject the Liquid Culture:
- Insert the cooled syringe needle into the self-healing injection port.
- Inject 5-10cc of liquid culture, moving the needle slightly while injecting.
- If using only one bag, up to 10cc may be injected, though this is not strictly necessary.
- Seal & Store the Syringe:
- If reusing, recap the needle and store it properly.
- If not reusing, dispose of the needle safely and place the syringe in a recycling container.
Step 3: Incubation & Colonization
- Days 1-4: Mycelium should begin colonization.
- Days 5-10: Allow further growth before gently shaking the bag to promote even colonization.
- Days 21+: If fully colonized, proceed to the next stage.
- Maintain an incubation temperature of 21-24°C (70-76°F) for optimal results.
- Avoid handling the filter patch to prevent contamination.
- If colonization takes longer than expected, be patient—growth rates vary.
Once colonization is complete, it's time to set up your Bagtek Grow Kit!
Step 4: Planting & Substrate Colonization
- Sanitize Your Hands & Work Area:
- Wear nitrile gloves and wipe them down with isopropyl alcohol.
- Sanitize the spawn and substrate containers before opening.
- Combine Spawn & Substrate:
- Open both containers and pour their contents into the designated fruiting bag.
- Mix Thoroughly & Secure the Bag:
- Fold the top of the bag twice and shake well to evenly mix the spawn and substrate.
- Break apart any mycelium clumps to ensure even dispersion.
- Lightly tamp the bag on a flat surface to settle the substrate.
- Fold the opening twice and secure it with paperclips to prevent accidental openings and retain moisture.
Optional Step:
- Use the provided elastic band to wrap around the Bagtek Grow Kit ½ inch below the surface.
- This can enhance yield concentration and simplify harvesting.
Once your kit is set up, clean your workspace and place the Bagtek Grow Kit in a stable environment with minimal airflow, away from direct sunlight.
Step 5: Mycelium Run & Fruiting
- Within 48 hours, mycelium should begin spreading.
- Days 10-12: The substrate will fully consolidate.
- Briefly open the bag or lid for fresh air exchange.
- If the surface appears dry, lightly mist inside the bag to restore lost humidity.
Daily Monitoring:
- Look for tiny water beads along the surface—this indicates proper humidity.
- Avoid excessive misting; the goal is to maintain evaporation cycles for optimal mushroom formation.
- After 3-7 days, small hyphal knots will appear, eventually developing into pins—the beginning stage of your mushrooms.
Step 6: Harvesting & Flushing
Harvesting Your Mushrooms:
- Harvest mushrooms before the caps fully open to prevent excessive spore drop.
- Inspect the substrate for any signs of contamination before fully opening the bag.
- To harvest:
- Either pull the bag down or cut it open for easy access.
- Use alcohol-sanitized scissors or a scalpel to cut mushrooms at the base.
- Alternatively, twist and pull them off the substrate, though some substrate may come off with them.
Rehydration Process:
- After harvesting, replenish moisture by pouring ½ cup of cold water over the substrate or misting heavily.
- Let it sit for 4-6 hours, then drain any excess water.
Your Bagtek Grow Kit can be flushed multiple times, as long as there is no contamination present.
